“Flip the Script” Art installation was originally created for the Cultural Alliance Annual Meeting in December of 2024. The piece was moved and recreated to fill the vacant storefront at 133 Main St. in Glen Rock as part of the York County Trail Towns Storefront Catalyst Program.
The piece was originally created to represent paper pages unrolling from a scroll, and as a structure to hold memories by its viewers. Attendees of the annual meeting were invited to choose a scrapbook page and share a moment when a piece of art (music, theatre, etc) brought them closer to someone they love. They could then hang their memory alongside everyone else’s while the screen in the middle projected stories from our staff and board.
I love this project. The way the arches are created by white sides, they look beautiful against sharp corners. When the lights were added, the shadows they cast or beautiful. There are over 100 pieces of handcrafted origami which hold and reflect the light. When you look into just one archway at a time it almost feels like a portal, crossed with a mid-century city skyline with actual clothes lines strung across.
The installation was conceived, designed, and built by lead artist Rita Whitney, guest artist Scott Bitzer, andd a group of 4 interns from the Pennsylvania College of Art & Design (PCA&D). Design thinking processed helped the interns to come up with the core concept and prompt, and the intricately made details while learning much about physical construction and materials. The internship was made possible by the PA Council on the Art’s Arts in Education Program which provides valuable learning experiences for students of all ages through the arts.
The relocation of the installation to Glen Rock is funded by the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts’ Creative Communities Grant program.
