Cultural Alliance Awards Mission Partner Grants, Positions 2020 Campaign as COVID-19 Arts Resiliency Fund
York, PA –In June of 2020, The Cultural Alliance granted a total of $597,000 in critical, unrestricted operational funding to its 8 Mission Partners: The Appell Center for the Performing Arts, Creative York, The York County History Center, Greater York Dance, the York Art Association, the York Symphony Orchestra, York Youth Symphony Orchestra, and York Junior Symphony Orchestra. These grants are in addition to $30,000 in operational funding awarded in March, 2020 to five new Impact Partners: Belmont Theatre, DreamWrights Center for Community Arts, Eichelberger Performing Arts Center, Hanover Area Arts Guild, and the Susquehanna Folk Music Society. Thanks to partnerships with the York County Community Foundation and Give Local York, the Cultural Alliance was additionally able to distribute $20,000 in relief grants to 50 York County artists from March-May, 2020 whose creative practices and incomes were impacted by COVID-19. All of these dollars were raised in the Cultural Alliance 2019 Annual Campaign.
Using three months of data on the effects of the pandemic on our arts sector, the indicators are alarming.
- 95% of our artists and arts organizations are currently projecting loss of income into mid-2021, and will be unable to serve thousands of people who depend on them due to enhanced safety protocols.
- Earned and contributed revenues for 2020 will be reduced by 50-85% due to social distancing and the economic recession.
- York County could lose $4.7 million of economic impact that our cultural community brings into our local shops, businesses, and neighborhoods.
“Continuing support for arts organizations and artists will be critical for their survival, as they weather the next 12-15 months of financial hardship brought on by the Covid-19 pandemic,” stated Kelley Gibson, President of the Cultural Alliance of York County. “Our 2020 Annual Campaign will act as the COVID-19 Resiliency fund of our arts community, allowing us to efficiently raise donations and equitably distribute operational grants throughout 2021 as our arts groups and artists work to innovate their programming and re-open.”
