Coming Home: Cultural Alliance Moves to the Grotto Commons

by | Apr 4, 2025

In 2000, just as the Cultural Alliance of York County was starting out, they were in need of furnishings and supplies. Rudy Art Glass owner and passionate arts supporter Steve Mitchell stepped in and gifted CAYC with four desks made of etched Rudy glass. These desks were a perfect representation of the cultural community that CAYC was founded to support-completely unique, beautifully crafted, and designed to get more done with less.  From behind those desks the Cultural Alliance spent the next 25 years investing in and lifting up our cultural community as Steve continued to be a supporter and cheerleader from his office at 15 East Philadelphia Street until his retirement. Our friend Steve passed away in April, 2023.

When The Grotto purchased the former Rudy Art Glass building to create a 46,000 square foot space to support thinkers, creators and entrepreneurs, the Cultural Alliance knew which space would be ours.  On Friday, March 28th we moved our Rudy glass desks into Steve’s former office, which features the same etched glass in the windows.  We could feel Steve’s presence as we finally brought the glass desks back home, where they are meant to be.  Thank you Steve, and please visit us at the Grotto Commons at 17 East Philadelphia Street, 2nd floor.
